Thrift Shopping 2.0: Ditch The Coupons For Rebate Apps Like Ibotta

Like most rational people, I love saving money. Do you want to get cash back and gift cards for buying the things you’d buy anyway? Do you love to thrift shop? If so, have you heard about Ibotta?

Couponing Didn’t Work For Me

I started couponing after watching TLC’s Extreme Couponers coming away with stockpiles of households for next to nothing. It was an endeavor that I never managed to save more than $100-$120 a month doing.

While couponing sounds like a good payoff, I had to spend hours upon hours searching for, collecting, clipping, and organizing these coupons. And, that’s not counting the hours it would take going through the stores with said coupons matching sales to coupons and ensuring the terms were met for redemption. Eventually, I just couldn’t devote the energy to it.

Ibotta Works

Then I found Ibotta. It’s a cash rebate app, and it will change the way you thrift shop forever. The app features a plethora of retail niches - grocery, online shopping, travel, liquor, restaurants, arts and crafts, and so on. For each niche, Ibotta has participating retailers. Each retailer has specific rebates for the store. There are also “any” rebates that can be redeemed via purchases from any retailer.

I’ve used Ibotta for two years and have saved almost 1,300. The effort level is minimal. I just open the app before I shop to see if it’s an online or in-store participant or if there’s an “any” rebate for the item I’m seeking. Click on the rebates I want, make the purchase, and then scan either the receipt, my rewards card for the retailer, or the receipt’s QR code. Within a few hours, the rebate is credited to my Ibotta account.

There are thousands of rebates and retailer participants, which means most purchases you make will have a rebate. If I buy a bottle of wine at a liquor store, it most likely has an Ibotta rebate. If I buy a package of cookies at Walmart, it most likely has an Ibotta rebate. If I go on vacay, Ibotta most likely has a rebate through hotels.com for accommodations. If I order off amazon.com, Ibotta likely has a rebate.

Why not be a thrift shopper and take advantage of that money back for such purchases? It takes less than two minutes to search for a given rebate and redeem it. When you’re ready for your payout, get the cash directly deposited to PayPal or choose from a number of gift cards.

To add a little icing to your savings, Ibotta offers users bonuses for redeeming certain rebates and redeeming a certain number of rebates. You can connect with friends and family, creating an Ibotta team, to earn even more teamwork bonuses.

From Nurse To Cafeteria Worker: Finding Yourself After Caregiving

Self-help books often issue an edict that life is what you make it. If you want it, then just go out and get it. While that may work for some, most of us live in a world happening around us, to us, and either moving against us or with us. We can’t control life’s tides no more than we can control the ocean’s tide. Being at the right place, time, circumstance, etc has a lot to do with it. Now, that’s not to say that you’re not a special snowflake if you just jump on a boat and set sail without a map, food, water, and other supplies. Life is about planning, thinking ahead, and making moves to be in that right time and place. For some, however, no amount of diligence and prep work alters the course life’s tides takes you.  I thought my course was set. I worked hard to finish nursing school. I made moves in my first nursing job as a medication nurse that led me to becoming charge nurse within months and ADON (assistant director of nursing) after a year. I treated starting a family i...
